Gunflint Lake is a perfect lake to rent a boat and motor and go exploring. There are waterfalls that
you can visit, islands to stop at for a lunch break, sandy beaches to play at, and of course there are
many fishing holes waiting to be found. If you bring your own boat and motor you have a complimentary
slip at the dock. Gunflint Lake is also an entry point to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and day trips often start from Gunflint Lake.

A variety of hiking trails start right behind the Outfitters taking you to the high cliffs, Lonely Lake,
the South Rim, and several scenic overlooks. They are laced through our back basin and vary in
length from 1 to 5 miles in length. In addition, there are many other hiking trails just a few miles
from the lodge, so we have many days of hiking opportunities for all guests.
|
We are located adjacent to the famed Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (you can see it
across the lake), so you have the choice of several nearby canoe routes to explore and paddle. The
choices include everything from short easy paddles to a portage trip deeper into the wilderness.
If desired, we pack lunches for your day long trips. Stop up at the Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters
located across the road from the lodge to discuss the many different day trip options that are offered.

Our professional massage therapist is ready to sooth away your stress and get you on the way to

| Welcome to the Gunflint Stables from our Lead Horses:
Why hike when you can sit back, enjoy the scenery, and ride a horse?
Enjoy peaceful guided trail rides through the Superior National Forest
Let our 18 horses help you explore the Superior National Forest from a unique view. Our experienced Wranglers will guide you through the vast miles of trails on steady steeds. Whether you enjoy a scenic ride or a full day adventure, you will be able to capture the essence of a changing forest. Traveling on horseback lets you enjoy the endless beauty while relaxing and basking in the sun on your faithful mount.
A hat, long pants, and closed toed shoes are ideal for comfortable riding.
Our horses summer at Gunflint Lodge and vacation during the winter in Pine River, MN. The season generally runs from May to October, 7 days a week. During the horses’ 6 months vacation, they lack contact with people. Surprising enough, it only takes about 2-5 days for them to readjust to summer work. Many of our 4- legged friends have been with us for over 8 years. Obviously, we do acquire new horses as others move on to retirement. Each year is filled with training and new friendships. We have a wide variety of horses that range from Quarter Horses to Arabians and everything in between. If you’re a beginner or experienced, we have the horse for you. Our talented wranglers are great at teaming you up with a horse that fits your needs. The many hours spent on the trails together creates a deep bond between wrangler and horse. We invite you to join us for a ride and bond with a horse of your own as you enjoy the marvels that await you around each corner of our beautiful trails. Prices vary depending on the ride. We offer one hour, two hour, breakfast, dinner, and half day lunch rides. Please contact us for questions regarding price and availability.

Glide through wooded routes like the early Gunflint settlers on an old-fashioned horsedrawn
sleigh ride. After the ride, warm up with a steamy mug of hot chocolate served at
the homestead. Sleigh rides are offered at the Okontoe Stables, a 30-minute drive south of
Gunflint Lodge. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak season and holidays. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak season and over holidays - feel free to call ahead to reserve your space so you don't miss out!
