I got behind the curve on our reporting--Sue and I were sent
out on a mission. We had to go to the Florida Keys to catch Lobster for a fall staff dinner!!!
August and September fishing has been good, but in different ways from the normal.
Saganaga produced a modest number of trophies, but there is a younger age class of walleyes that seem to be a bumper crop. By next year they will be up to 3# and better, and they combine with the big ones very nicely. Fishing in Northern Light Lake, north of Saganaga, has been outstanding during August and September. Every boat seems to have had their limit before noon, so they could do catch and release fishing. Here are some of the trophies that came in.
Dan Giranda of Gurnee, IL caught and released a 28" walleye from Northern Light

Fishing has been great, while the weather has been unsettled (that means some rainy days, a thunder storm one night and a few windy days). The unsettled days have been outnumbered by the good days, so it is not all bad by any means. Here is a list of more of the lunkers that have been caught recently, and the proud fishermen that made it all happen.
We were beginning to get worried that Shirley and Jerry Bestler of Star Prairie, WI had lost their touch catching lunkers, but they came through with shining colors by the end of the week.

Summer is settling down into the normal groove. The water levels are about right, the temperature is warming up for swimming, and the fishing guides are having some great days. Our best producing lakes are Saganaga, North and Northern Light for walleye, lake trout and smallmouth bass. The whitefish have started to bite already and the northerns are hitting on Northern Light.

The fish are biting and the water is unusually high. The ice went out at just the right time so the walleye had time to spawn and start to school up in some of the sheltered bays that warm up first. The lake trout have been very active on both Gunflint and North lakes. Most of the Gunflint trout have been running in the 3-4 pound size--up a bit in size from past averages.
