fishing at gunflint

2002

September 27, 2002 This was one of the best years we have had for fishing. Nearly everyone released huge Walleye while out with the guides. The release board here at Gunflint was filled twice with all the fish that were put back. As the photos below show, all the kids (young and old) had good luck out on the water this year. Remember to get all the gear ready to go early for next summer.

August 11, 2002 Looking at how many moster fish the kids have brought in, this week it's all about the kids. Pictured to the left is Laura Mott with her 32 1/2" walleye that she got on her second cast of the day while out with her dad on Saganaga. Pictured to the right is Miles Walsh with his 32 " walleye that he got while out with his uncle on Saganaga. The big story of the week is 13 year old Justin Branock and his 31" walleye. Justin's grandparents take each grandchild on a major fishing trip when they turn 13. So far it looks like Justin has picked the best location in the United States since his fish will now be the largest on the family wall back home. Congratulations to all the kids (young and old) on your excellent catches.

Gunflint WalleyeHere are some of the releases from the "old" kids these last few days.

Erik Hawkins released a 28 1/2" walleye

Corine Brewer released 29" and 29 1/2" walleyes

Brian Yuan released a 29 1/2" walleye

Ignatius Yuan released a 28" walleye

Bob Hill released a 29" walleye

July 21, 2002 This past week our guests have had an
incredible time of catching large walleye with numerous fish
over 28" caught and released. Smallmouth bass fishing is
continuing to be excellent with large numbers being caught Gunflint Walleye
and a few huge trophies. Lake trout fishing has gone deep,
down riggers are a necessary if you are serious about trolling
for trout. Stream trout are being caught in area lakes and streams
by the fly fishermen by the handful. Lake water levels are down
which is making some lakes harder to access by boat. Here are
some of the larger releases for this week.

George Reznik released 28 1/2" and 30" walleyes
Jim Dahlin released 28" and 30" walleyes
Mike and Pat Feeney released 28" and 32 1/2" walleyes (HUGE FISH!!!!)

July 16, 2002 The mayflies have hatched! Everything is going nuts eating up this year's hatch. Fish sizes and numbers are up with some huge releases. The coolers were so full, the guides needed help getting them out of the boats. This week there were 15 releases of fish over the 26" mark, here are a just few of them.

July 9th - Mike Mertz released a 29 1/2" walleye
July 13- Craig Brinkerhoff landed a 30 1/2" walleye
July 13- John Brown released a 28 1/2" walleye
July 14th - Ed Park released a 28 1/2" walleye
July 14th - Jerry Brown released a 28" walleye

July 8, 2002 This last week has been just amazing. The number of fish being caught and the sizes are almost too good to be true. One of the fishing guides reported that this "has been the best week of large fish caught" that he can ever remember. Reports are flowing in from all areas of large numbers of bass, northern, trout, and walleye being caught (especially from the canoeists). This week we boated the largest lake trout of the season so far, weighing in at a whopping Gunflint Trout15 pounds. (check out the picture, Jerry is one happy camper with this trout) There have also been numerous walleye caught in the 8-10 pound range.

July 4th - Mary Jane Platt from Edina released 28 1/4", 29", and 30 1/2" walleyes - WOW!!!
July 5th - Jerry Bestler from Star Prairie released a 30" walleye
July 5th - Shirley Bestler from Star Prairie released a 28" walleye
July 6th - Gabe Moody from Abrams released a 17 1/2" small mouth bass

June 27, 2002 "It's the best we can ever remember!" That's what the guides are saying about this year's fishing. It is not stretching the truth that just about every day they need help lifting the Gunflint Walleyecoolers out of their boats and then spend over an hour cleaning the day's catch. They have been concentrating primarily on walleye and lake trout, although the bass fishing has also been outstanding. The weather has been cooperating with some windy days to keep the "walleye chop" going!

Brian Reichel from Thornton, CO released a 28 1/4" walleye
Bill Curry from Carmel, IN released a 32" Northern Pike
Andrew Falk from San Francisco released a 29" and a 28" walleye
Dawn Aiello-Klocek from Wadsworth, IL released a 28.5" walleye

June 13, 2002 We are just about a month into the fishing season and by all accounts it is a good one! The pace was slow the first several days; the weather was unusually cold going into the opener, so the walleyes were a bit more sluggish than we are used to seeing. The last two weeks, however, fishermen have been coming back with tales of excellent walleye fishing and consistent luck with lake trout. For walleye the best results are coming with a lindy rig set-up and leeches, and the trout are most responsive to minnows. Still haven't seen much with the smallmouth yet, but they should pick up over the next week or so.

Mary Kay Matson from Waterloo, IA released a 28" walleye from Saganaga
Larry Schei from Grand Marias, MN released a 29" walleye from Saganaga
Sue Schei, Larry's wife, released a 29 1/2" walleye from Saganaga
