fishing at gunflint

2003

August 10, 2003 The summer is flying along at a record pace and the fish are coming in strong.  Although this bass is not the largest bass landed recently, it was Zach's first bass at Zach's first bass on ownGunflint all on his own so he was very proud of it and had to have a picture.  Saganaga, Northern Light, and North lakes are still producing some very nice walleye.  The largest released recently goes to Nancy Scott of Bloomington, MN with a 31" walleye from Saganaga.  A few more releases to tempt the fishing bug:

Ben Duerst of Hudson, WI released 28 1/2" and 29 1/2"        walleyes

Sherry Walker of Ballwin, MO released a 29 1/2" walleye

David and Micheal Schodin of Grayslake, IL released a        29" walleye (first release for young Micheal,        congratulations)

July 20, 2003 It would appear the North and Gunflint lakes have turned on the steam and the fish are just jumping to get in the boats.  Gunflint produced a 10 pound walleye that is headed for the taxidermist and North gave away a 33" walleye for John Monigold's wall.  Magnetic Lake, just a short mile from Gunflint Lodge, recently gave up a 28 1/2" walleye to Riley Boehm which he released.  Worms and leaches are both working on Gunflint, North, and Magnetic Lakes.  Method of choice appears to be bobber fishing the rock piles in 20 to 30 feet of water.  The first lake trout surge has passed, but with my folks limiting out yesterday in just a few hours I know the trout are still biting well.  Here are a few releases from the last couple of weeks:

Jane Napieralski of Winona, MN released a 32" walleye

Patti and Mike Feeney of Shorewood, MN released 30" and 30 1/2" walleyes

July 7, 2003 Fourth of July weekend and the whales just keeping running to the boats.  These last EIGHT releases are all over the 29" mark (whales by any measuring tape).  A few of these were released here on Gunflint Lake and North Lake.

John Crook of Ft. Worth, TX released a 31" walleye
Robert Falk of Atlanta, GA released a 29" walleye
Victoria Longstreet of Correl Gables, FL released a 30" walleye
Suzanne Seegers of Orange, CA released a 31" walleye
Jennifer Augustine of Ashland, WI released a 31 1/2" walleye
Mary Jane Platt of Edina, MN released a 29" walleye
Sharon Muller of New Berlin, WI released a 31" walleye
Mike Verdesea of Naples, FL released a 32" lake trout

June 22, 2003 These last few weeks have just been great for fishing.  The walleye are still up shallow and biting on leaches and all is well on the lakes.  Saganaga has been particularly good this last week with some real whales coming out of the water.  Here are a few of the larger fish released over the last couple of weeks:
Mark Sadowski of Brookfield, WI released a 31" walleye
Jeff Glock of Oak Park, IL released a 30 1/2" walleye
Byron Krogen of Daphne, AL released a 30" walleye
Nick Gates of Daphne, AL released a 33" walleye WOW, huge fish!!!!

June 3, 2003 The Lake Trout are still coming in strong up shallow (20-40 feet).  The guides are saying minnows on Dan's Dandy's with a 5/8 oz weight is perfect for the Lake Trout Gunflint Lake Trouton Gunflint right now.  The Walleye are continuing to come in also.  Leeches on jigs was the way to go on Saganaga this last week.  Each of the guides has brought in very nice coolers of eaters everyday.  Here are a few of the releases for this week:
Kyle Edlund of Minneapolis, MN released a 29 1/2" walleye
Dennis Blanchard of Black River Falls, WI released a 28 1/2" walleye
Frank Bova of Yardley, PA released a 29 1/2" walleye

May 15, 2003 As the new fishing season starts to get underway we are already beginning to see trophy fish being landed.  While a few of these trophies end up on the walls at home, most are returned to the waters from which they came to await the next angler.  Some of the initial highlights so far are:
Brook and John Strickland of Dothan, AL released 31" and 29" walleyes
Jerry McAllister of Hammond, WI released a 29" walleye

June 1, 2003 Walleyes, Lake Trout, Bass, it's all good right now.  Saganaga is doing excellent with too many released to even mention.  The average release size right now is over 29" for Walleyes.  Gunflint Lake is producing Lake Trout at a very steady rate.  It looks like the Harveys are off and running this year as they brought these four Lake Trout in from Gunflint after just a few hours.
