This will be our 7th annual Gunflint Greenup weekend. For the first few years we have
concentrated on planting trees in areas affected by the Ham Lake fire of 2007. In
following years we have worked releasing the trees we planted. That means cutting
the vegetation that was starting to crowd out our plantings so they can get past their
critical growth period and get the sunlight they need to get big and tall.
This year our Green Up weekend will have an expanded focus. The plantings of the last few years in the area adjacent to the Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center have been very successful, but we are now facing a lot of blow downs which are left overs from the Ham Lake fire. This year we are going to tackle that project and start to clear the dead and downfall trees. We will be cutting them up and stacking them in burn piles--for burning when it is safe--either sometime in the spring or in the fall after snow falls.
We will all go out on Saturday for several hours and offer helping hands to start clearing the grounds of this museum showpiece of the northwoods.
Includes: Best cabin available, all meals, and project leaders. Taxes are additional.
Please bring a set of nippers, if you have one, for cutting branches, etc.
