Allow us to make Gunflint your "home away from home" for a few days
Here in the Laurentian Highlands of northestern Minnesota we are in the headwaters of the arctic watershed, in a boreal forest of pines, birch, aspen and cedar. Up in this area, people are the visitors and the natives are the deer, moose, bear, wolves, fox and beaver.
Gunflint is focused on top quality accommodations (all with a fireplace), an outstanding variety of meals, appetizers and beverages, and a variety of sports and activities during the upcoming months, which of course change as the winter rolls along. This is the time of year that we enjoy the silent sports-cross country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding, plus all our guided naturalist activities. 70 km of expertly groomed ski trails start right behind our activity building, in addition to dedicated trails for snowshoeing and dog sledding. To round out all your recreational opportunities, we have a couple of snowmobiles for rent so you can go for a nice ride if you like, and the kids have a sledding hill behind the activity building.
We offer three basic types of accomodations: Classic Cabins, Gunflint Lake Homes, and Romantic Cottages, plus the Pow Wow Lodge. Our approach to setting our cabin prices is somewhat different than other resorts in that we include many of your vacation activities in our base rate.
The Classic Cabins, Lake Homes and Romantic Cottages all have a rock fireplace and many have a private sauna and hot tub. Nearly all have a complete kitchen, and many have a washer and dryer. Your firewood is stacked up in your entry way and your first fire is laid waiting for your match. All linens and bedding is provided with oversized towels, etc. Each cabin has either a charcoal or gas grill outside. Our cabins vary in size from one to five bedrooms and nearly all have a full bathroom for each bedroom. Housekeepers stop by every day to change your towels and to check on any needs you might have. They also check the firewood supply.
The Pow Wow Lodge is a unique rental, with five bedrooms, three baths, a huge living room with a rock fireplace, game room, gourmet kitchen, garage, active TV, wireless internet, three season BBQ porch, rock garden with picnic table, and a lake side sitting porch.
All our naturalist activities are included. Our head naturalist leads activities 5 days a week that range from nature hikes, to animal searches in the evening, to wolf howling, etc. Our activities vary by the week and month depending on what is happening in the forest.
A variety of cross country ski trails and snowshoe trails start right behind our winter activitiy building. Another 100+ yards back into the woods is our sled dog yard where all our dog sled trips start. There is also a small sledding hill right behind the activity building. Cross country skis, snowshoes, and snowmobiles are available for rent in that building.
At the main lodge you are always welcome to free coffee, tea or hot chocolate anytime you wish. In addition we try to keep a full jar of home baked cookies for you. The lodge also has free wi-fi if you just have to check in with the big world. In the entry way of the lodge there are big bins of corn and sunflower seeds--guests are expected to feed the deer and keep their cabin bird feeders filled. The lodge has a decent inventory of DVDs and CDs for your free use.

Thank you very much for all the helpful information you provided. Based on our communication I made the reservation and spent 3 fantastic days at the cabin this week plus I made future reservation for my friend. I am very happy with every aspect of my stay: it was absolutely what I was looking for! The amenities were excellent, the service was superb and genuinely friendly, the staff was very helpful and knowledgeable....and thank you for the packed and tracked ski trails, Bruce :) I will come back at the end of January and definitely more after that
Thank you and have a fantastic day!
